5 Days – University of Regina (Regina, Saskatchewan)
The mission of our 5 Days for the Homeless campaign is to raise awareness about homelessness in Regina and collect monetary donations for our partner, Carmichael Outreach. In 2018 we were able to raise $53,000 for Carmichael Outreach! In 2019, we are determined to make the campaign the biggest success yet and reach our goal of $55,000 (Although we do hope to surpass our goal!). We will also be collecting clothing and house items to donate to Carmichael Outreach and the Regina Food Bank. Throughout the campaign our organizing committee, volunteers, and participants aim to raise awareness about homelessness in the Regina community.
The money that is raised during the project will be directly donated to the Carmichael Outreach Centre in Regina. 5 Days for the Homeless helps to raise funds for this extremely deserving organization and provides education to students about the severity of homelessness, especially among youth. By seeing their friends and fellow students sleeping and living outside it puts the pressing issue of homelessness into perspective. This event is meant to show that homelessness is not always a choice but a matter of circumstance, and anyone could end up without a place to call home. It also places emphasis on the need for organizations such as Carmichael Outreach to help these struggling individuals.
The Carmichael Outreach Center helps our city by providing services and supplies to those in Regina who need it most. They offer harm reduction services, health education programs and counselling referrals. This non-profit organization also provides emergency food and baby supplies for up to 400 people each day.
Throughout the week, large events and a final press conference will be held to increase awareness about homelessness in our community, and to help with the fundraising efforts.
