By Paige Cey, CABS F2021 Director of Media Outreach Earlier this fall, the Canadian Association of Business Students hosted our first virtual conference, the Virtual Canadian Leadership Retreat (CLR). This event is a great opportunity to learn from incredible industry leaders, gain new skills and resources, and network with the amazing BSA executive community. While conferences may look different for the next while, we feel lucky to have the opportunity to virtually meet and engage with our BSA leaders across Canada.  The conference planning team was extremely creative with making the first virtual retreat a huge success! As with any CABS conference, the delegates had a lot of fun socializing. While this conference looked different than a typical in-person conference, we had games nights and Outback Team Building and Training brought team building activities which were a lot of fun and incredibly well-received.  Alongside amazing opportunities for socializing and networking…

By Mitch Bellefleur, CABS F2021 VP External and Executive VP After many long discussions, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CABS Board of Directors had to make the difficult decision to cancel the first conference of the fiscal year, the Canadian Business School Conference (CBSC). However, while the conference was not able to be hosted in person this year, that does not mean that students lost out on the value! In place of CBSC, CABS planned a Summer Series which culminated with the first ever Virtual Canadian Leadership Retreat. Here is a recap of what took place throughout the summer! June 13th – BSA Presidents & JDCC Captains CBSC normally has two main goals: to allow BSA Presidents to connect with one another, and to allow JDCC Captains to connect with one another. Given this, we thought it only appropriate to have the first session in the Summer Series aim…

By Mitch Bellefleur, CABS F2021 VP External and Executive VP After a strange summer filled with quarantining and Zoom calls, students across the country have returned to classes for the fall semester, albeit in a very different way than ever before. Given that students are returning to an unfamiliar environment, the CABS Leadership Team wanted to take some time to give students some general reminders, as well as information about some of the initiatives CABS will be putting on this Fall! Digital Exhaust and Mental Health One of the main points of feedback the CABS team heard throughout the summer, both internally and externally, was the idea of digital exhaust. Many students found themselves feeling mentally tired due to the amount of time they had to spend at their desks, in front of their laptops, and not being able to be with friends in person. The unfortunate truth is that…

By Anika Peng, CABS F2021 President During these unprecedented times of 2020, it can be difficult to figure out how to grow your network and connections virtually. Technology and social media has helped to create an environment that gives everyone the ability to connect, but it can still pose challenges. Especially for business students that have not leveraged their online presence in the past, this can be a difficult change.  Being a virtual national organization, the CABS Leadership Team and directors have needed to rely on various platforms and tools to be able to connect with business students across the country. As a result, we have been able to develop an understanding of how to best network in 2020. In this blog post, we will go over the various ways that you can continue to grow your connections, even in this unprecedented year.  Building your LinkedIn Presence  LinkedIn is one…

By Evan Pitchie, CABS F2019 President Transition your next generation of student leaders can be simple and fun. Here are a few tips on how you can achieve that. It’s that time of year again! Incoming executives are full of energy, ready to bring change to their school and community. Outgoing executives, on the other hand, feel a bittersweet sensation. Part of them feels like it’s time to pass the torch, but another part feels like it’s going to miss the rush and the thrill of the busy lifestyle. I was involved in my business student association (BSA) for 3 years. It has now been 2 years since I am no longer involved with my BSA, so I want to share some advice with all outgoing and incomings. Tips for Outgoings Do you remember the transition you received when you started? Were you happy with it? If yes, then be…

Student leaders work incredibly hard to create amazing value. I think more people should know about it. I have been involved with student groups (SGs) for 4 years on a local and national scale. Year over year, I see the same problem come up and I’d like to propose a solution. The Purpose of Student Groups Every SG serves a different purpose. There are some that do advocacy, others cater to a special interest group, others represent a faculty and much more. However, what they all have in common is that they exist to bring value to the members they represent or that support them. The Problem A problem I’ve noticed over the years is that SGs only begin to build relationships with their stakeholders (students, sponsors…) when they have an event or initiative coming up. As a result, only sometimes does the SG manage to reach the desired outcome and…
